Why do you think West is free to bid 5? Who would ever bid 5 if they KNEW that partner had taken 4 as a transfer?

Clearly there was no damage since 6 can be easily made; therefore, no redress is necessary. However, the 5 bid is out of bounds. The OP does not specify the use of screens, so West was expecting to hear an alert of 4. Had s/he heard that alert they would clearly not have bid 5.

If partner had alerted, West would have had to work to figure out what 5 meant. It's hard to figure, but there are 2 distinct possibilities:

1. Partner psyched and has only a hand full of diamonds.
2. Partner has some sort of super-max in support of hearts and is bidding controls.

Whatever it is, bidding 5 is NOT in the picture. Again, I see no damage, but I don't get how everyone can be so sanguine about the 5 call. In my book, South could pass if they thought partner might be the type to psych or they could bid 5 to drive forward slam exploration.

I would expect 6-7 hcp flattish with spades stopped and perhaps a willingness to defend 2x. I like the concept of 1nt as leb, but I don't think it would occur to me at the table.

I had an auction a couple weeks back:

2 - (1) - 2 - (p); 3 - (p) - p - (p)

I was the (first) 2 bidder and my (very) non-expert pick-up partner chastised me as she was laying down the dummy, “Pre-emptor is not supposed to bid again!”

I made 3, scoring 9 of 11 matchpoints.

x, kjt9, akqt9,xxx? I don't play mini-roman. Could you bid it on that? I would think most precision players would open that 1 (planning to rebid 2 lying about length). Perhaps they hadn't had a chance to trot out the mini-roman for a while, or perhaps (as Brad is suggesting) there is a memory lapse in progress. Either way, we have a non-fit auction at the 3-level. Partner has shown no sign of life. It's IMPs, so doubling them into game (or us into a vul 3-level contract with a bad trump split) seems unappealing. What else is there other than pass?

Without knowing what sort of hands partner's pass denies we're entirely on a guess. Any discussions about a defense?

That was my first thought then I started to feel like partner mightn't want them to correct to 2 and be stuck with a lebensohl auction. This way she can accept the bid and and still x-fer at the 2-level.

… and then there's the occasional very odd unblocking maneuver.

I would have bid the East hand differently - I'd have started with 1 - but you certainly can't say that East didn't show a big hand. East has forced to the 3-level when partner has discouraged at every turn. At some point West has to look at his hand and show partner some sign of life. 3 was not a sign of life.

I'm not thrilled that there's no fit, but the hand's too good to not give it a shot. My minor suit honors may fit nicely with partner's minor suit oriented hand (as long as the opponents don't take their tricks off the top).

I expect that there are plenty, like me, who generally only play for BBO “Masterpoints” or with humans online for no Masterpoints.

The rest of the story is not terribly exciting. Partner reversed. The auction went (without interference):

1d - 1s;
2h - 2s;
2nt- 4nt;
p

I didn't find out the auction at the other table, but 660 was a push (of course Deep Finesse says we should make 6). Afterward, when I asked my partner about the bid, he didn't seem at all conflicted about it and felt like it was a pretty normal reverse. He's a very good player, and we'd played a solid game. I just wanted a sanity check.

I held: AKT76, T2, T2, AQ85 and decided to go low based on the misfit. It makes six because qjx of diamonds is onside. Even with that, you'd still need to guess the heart suit and get a trick there to make 6.

Jeff, I think at this point the correct response is, “Wow, based on the voting, it's pretty clear that I was wrong.” Then you thank everyone for their input and move on.

This happened to me just yesterday versus the robots. Admittedly, my hand wasn't quite this good, but I went for 1400; however, that hasn't stopped me from doubling again. Give partner the hand that my robot CHO held: Qxxxx, xx, xx, Jxxx and there is play for 4. It's not necessarily a favorite, but partner's hand could be a bit better.

Even if this were desirable (not my cup of tea, really), it's not an option here in ACBLland where big brother proscribes our 1nt openers. Here, since the singleton is not an A, K, or Q, a 1nt opener would be verboten.

Has anyone else noticed or cared that we are getting lots fewer and much less useful stats on our ACBL membership page?
