I was just looking at a list of my unit's masterpoint holders. I was a little surprised that of the 1360 masterpoint holders, exactly 200 have less than 10 points and half have less than 114 points. When you consider those numbers it isn't terribly surprising that so few have platinum points.

Yes, I felt the same way but not strongly enough to abstain. I bid 3nt since it's IMPs and we're vul, but we're a lot less likely to make it now that we've offered a roadmap. Maybe I should have taken that into account and chosen the low road. Nah.

This was from the WBL unit game (GNT qualifier) last Thursday night. I'll supply the rest of the story in a couple days.

From the OP, “3NT instead of 4♥ by South would have showed non-serious slam interest.”

Partner should have the sense to know that the K is not a valuable card. If you tend to have heart shortness or extra strength partner will be able to give appropriate weight to their lack of wasted values in hearts and appropriately discount heart honors.

I like this double better than the 4-3-3-3 crappy 12-count takeout double that is gaining popularity.

South has a monster hand after North splinters! I can't imagine not at least looking for slam with that hand.

John, is this agreement applicable for you at all vuls and all forms of scoring? Is it your feeling that either the hand is good enough to overcall with 65432 or, if it's not, that it's also not good enough to balance?

I'm tempted by the Q - partner likely has good hearts - but I'll go conservative with the K.

Doubling seemed obvious to me, but when no one else in this (admittedly small) robot tournament doubled (and went -550), I thought I should take a sanity check.

There were seven players: 5 bid 5, 1 passed and let his robot partner bid 5. I alone doubled and got my 0 when partner showed up with:
kj7543
akj94
j9
-

Declarer had:
-
85
ak83
q876542

Which, of course, left dummy with:
962
6
t6542
at93

For your convenience here, again, was my hand:
aqt8
qt732
q7
kj

Perhaps a more interesting question is should partner pull?

I wish we could add that note when we have a clear penalty double.

What GIB actually reads if you double is “5+; 11-21 HCP; 12-22 total pts” (although, I like yours better). If you choose to bid 5h GIB reads the exact same info.

I will post the results on Monday.

What, you think bridge players are competitive?

I've had success bidding 3nt over opposing preempts without a real stopper in the preemptor's suit; however, those hands tend to have flaws that makes other bids unattractive. In this case, you had ideal support for all of the unbid suits and nothing to speak of in diamonds. Brad can't bid anything but 3, and even with some extra hcp you can hardly be excited to hear 3.

All of the bids (and the pass) seem normal. Perhaps teammates could have tried 3 instead?

If your opponent wasn't willing to pass the re-opening double he shouldn't pass at the first opportunity.

The question of whether the table result should be changed really seems like a disingenuous attempt to improve the result through frivolous litigation. The director seems to have felt the same and ruled accordingly.

These gambling 3nt hands are so rare that the likelihood of an undisclosed understanding is small. We make hand evaluation decisions every time we play, and there are many hands that don't perfectly match our agreements. In this case, after making such a decision the 3nt bidder felt a need to catch up, and 6c was probably as likely to result in a top for you as in a bottom. You got fixed. It happens to all of us.

Was there UI transmitted? Maybe, but you asked neither the director nor us about that.

Okay, I guess it may be time to upgrade from my iPhone 4. I hadn't previously had a reason, but now it looks like I need to so I can use your app.

Chris, You certainly have a point about masterpoints being a reasonable marketing tool, but I feel strongly that the ACBL should also have a parallel measure for evaluating skill rather than experience.

While I was thinking about this, a possible fix for the system occurred to me (this may not be a new proposal). Perhaps we should have our masterpoint holding decay over time. This might actually enhance the marketing utility of the points (people would be forced to play just to maintain their level) and increase the utility related to skill evaluation.

The whole concept of masterpoints is so poorly conceived that the myriad masterpoint related problems shouldn't be surprising. I have nothing to offer as far as fixing the system. My suggestion is that the the our rating scheme be blown up and re-designed.
