Richard I was on a committee for the 2012 Memphis NABC. I cant speak for the other volunteers but for me it was a matter of pride in my city and wanting to be a good “hostess” for visitors to my city that motivated me to work as a volunteer.

This time around the locals have worked hard to raise money to enhance the hospitality above the minimum that could be provided with the funds provided by ACBL. We did the same in 2012. Where or not this extra hospitality is needed could be debated.

As stated by Steve Moese above, locals would not want to repeat these efforts every year.

I believe a solution could be found for permanent sites and reasonable hospitality (prizes, gifts, late night snacks, etc.) still maintained.

I believe that NABCs should not have to rely on volunteers.

The original post meant to suggest the Summer NABC be a non-permanent location allowing for variety in places to visit.

Perhaps the volunteer work could be revamped.
There will be pros and cons to such a plan. But perhaps worthy of consideration.

Don, the above latest bash re the housing bureau and who they may have hired appeared to me as you taking an opportunity to be clever at the expense of others. Surely there must be a happy medium between reflexively bashing and reflexively protecting.

I am not sure what is wrong with ACBL Live. It seems to do what I am looking for.

So, I will try not to automatically protect and defend ACBL even when they stumble. But as a retiree who appreciates her pension and long time employment and as a bridge player and member I consider ACBL my organization and consider it like family.

Don, I read your BW profile and your experience with bridge administration gives weight to your opinions. But I for one would appreciate your comments more if there was less immediate bashing of ACBL and its staff.

Randy, I thought I saw a comment by ACBL that there are no plans for child care at the Memphis NABC. I am reasonably certain that the local committee people have no plans to do what Donna Compton has done with the aid of ACBL and their negotiations with the host hotel. You question is not at all mean or rude and truly since I am not involved this time on any local committees I am not in the know.

However, I will ask around and see if anything is being discussed or considered regarding child care but I bet not.

The Memphis gang of bridge players are hoping that word has spread regarding the pleasant and well-lit playing space, the excellent hospitality, the convenience of the trolleys, the lots of good places to eat accessible via the trolley, and especially the great weather during the previous and only NABC ever held in Memphis. So ya'll come on down south to Memphis in March 2019. Just don't ask Ron Smith's opinion!

Michael, all of us who have worked as staff workers have observed that among the work force there are those who go the extra mile, those who do what is required and those who do less than is expected or paid for. Some have the proper work ethic and some don't. I always worked for my own satisfaction and up to the standards I set for myself. Luckily for me and my employer and the customer my mother preached that there is no shame in any job and if you are a ditch digger you should dig the best ditch possible. Or the old saw, a days work for a days pay.

“ACBL” has always been much maligned by various factions of the membership and I have always defended the staff and management as a whole. Good people do the job they are paid to do.

If you knew Memphis I believe you would say it does work in his favor.

Donna created the child care program when her girls were young. While you might say it was in her interest to do so, nevertheless she created a top notch program and oversaw it for many years. I suspect it was greatly appreciated by all who took advantage of the program. I don't believe she was compensated by ACBL in anyway.

To anyone who “signed up” for Hawaii and now feels mistreated I have sympathy for their disappointment only. NABCs are expensive and the child care was not cheap. I believe the parents can find a solution.

Whether or not notification of cancelation was timely enough to me is not worthy of discussion, second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking

We should all just thank Donna for a job well done and give a little credit to ACBL's contribution to Donna's vision.

I am as always a staunch defender of ACBL paid staff and others who give their time and energy to serve ACBL membership.

The USBC is the very best bridge event Jan is the very best. The years the USBC was held in Memphis were the best part of my work experience with ACBL

I would have liked the joke it better if Jeff et al had taken more ownership of the joke by including the signatures of some of those on one of the newly formed “expect” advisory committees. As the ever loyal ACBL retiree the very first comment slamming ACBL for “finally doing something right” displeased me.
