Almost all my doubles are takeout and I love “advance balancing” but not when they basically announce a misfit.

Yes, of course it is a UI problem. I thought some would see some merit in 4S but I was definitely mistaken!

Thanks for your unanimity. Except for the 6D bidder. Thanks for your humor.

There is a story about the late TD John Hamilton. Hamilton was an army colonel before becoming a full time TD and he sometimes ran tournaments as if he was still in the military. One of his pet peeves (trust me I know this from experience) was phony names on entries. This was before computers and the name you wrote was the name that was typed on the recap regardless of player #.

So he was directing a Swiss Team (an event he had part in inventing but that is another story) and had an odd number of teams. Rather than have a round robin he asked the tournament chair to find him a fill in team.

He was furious when he saw the entry for this team named four people with the last name of “Fill”. He went stomping out to the playing area to find the miscreants so he could give them a piece of his mind. He came to the table and said “Is this the Fill team” ready to spring.

He was taken aback when the man said something like “yes sir, I am John Fill, this is my wife Mary and our son and daughter Dick and Jane are at the other table”.

Hamilton paused a moment, took a deep breath and said, “I would like to thank you for playing on behalf of the ACBL” and walked away shaking his head.

Leslie West was also a guitarist in the rock band Mountain. Probably not the same one.

When I was little my parents had bridge playing friends (they were a partnership but I am not sure what else) named L. B. Barbie and Barbie Elbie. I swear to God.

There was a rubber bridge player in Detroit named Seymour Smelsey. He was a podiatrist.

Why is there ambiguity? Double here clearly suggests defending.

Two words - “active ethics”. Where is the harm in alerting?

I too love this event and miss playing in it. While I can't play this year, I will probably be looking for a team for 2018!

If a player faces a C&E hearing (now called Disciplinary Committee), the committee hears nothing about any forms from previous incidents unless they are part of the charge (and had been investigated).

Previous incidents, discipline, etc. are not used as the committee is to only judge on the incident at hand.

After a guilty finding, previous discipline (not forms or uninvestigated material) over the prior 24 months will be released to the committee to help them determine the appropriate remedial action.

The database is only to help us track who to investigate in the first place. For example if we get a report of a use of unauthorized information (like hesitation Blackwood) we probably won't investigate. But after the second or third report we probably would investigate, perhaps also investigating previous reports.

For club reports we won't even be doing that at this time.

“Are you going to be sending guidelines to the recorders and clubs about this? ”

I am certainly going to be in touch with District Recorders about a number of issues.

I want to be really clear about the club thing. Except for major ethics issues we have NO ability to investigate nor enforce discipline at the club level.

My desire for these Player Memos is only for a database. It is possible that our ways of handling club discipline might change over time based on what we receive. But at this time there will be no investigation of club player memos. They will simply be recorded and filed.
