He did play (with Franck Multon). Krzysztof Martens has been the Monaco coach for a long time but for a while before the championships there seemed to be some uncertainty regarding his eligibility as a player for the country. Apparently, he fulfills the criteria, either citizenship or residency, the EBL requires.

Jean-Charles Allavena, President of the Monaco Bridge Federation, can no doubt elaborate further on this topic.

In Budapest, times are obviously ideal for a European like me. As far as sleep is concerned, it's much tougher when we are in USA for the Nationals or team trials. The Spingold coming up in D.C. in a little over a month.

… or stay up. It is very late (early if you like) for people on the US west coast. 1 am, 4:20 am, 7 am and 9:40 am.

I suggest at least one match with European players in the first half since the start time is pretty late (9 pm) for Europe.

Sorry, I didn't realise that. Maybe one of the moderators wants to delete my article.

Lars mentions Sweden's Rudolf “Putte” Kock. He (and Einar Werner) was also the man behind the SOS Redouble, originally known as the Kock-Werner Redouble.

Jens Auken (1949-2014) represented Denmark in basketball 35 times before he played over 400 international bridge matches for his country.

Here is what I wrote about him on Bridge Winners the day after he passed away:

As the 2011 Alan Truscott Memorial Award receiver I can confirm what a great honour this is. You deserve it more than anyone, Traian. Many congratulations!

The phrase with “make the team significantly better than the initial team from Poland” is silly (at best).

If Gawrys-Klukowski had been better, they would have been selected for these championships one would assume. They were not.

It's not entirely true, Jonathan. Here are the facts:

On my Facebook timeline yesterday I had this headline …

“BREAKING NEWS

Balicki-Zmudzinski dumped (Poland playing 4-handed), and Bulgaria is out.”

Underneath was a link to the announcement by the WBF Credentials Committee regarding B-Z. I added the part with Bulgaria, because a source I considered reliable told me that. I didn't accuse or slander anyone.

Several people commented (mostly about B-Z and the Polish team). Among whose who posted was Jerry Stamatov, member of the Bulgaria open team. He didn't understand what this was all about and confirmed that Bulgaria would play with all three pairs.

The moment he wrote that, I promised to delete and did delete “and Bulgaria is out.” I didn't hide anything, because you can always see the history when a post has been edited. If you have access to FB, you will be able to see how it unfolded. Stamatov was happy after Bulgaria was removed from the headline.

I am obviously sorry that I wrote something that turned out to be wrong (that has taught me not to rely on that source again) but I did the best I could under the circumstances.

Edit: Typo corrected,

Yes, but the point you're missing is that they can't play as individuals with other partners either. Before today it was only as a pair.
