Jyri, I‘ve never played that, so I can‘t comment that, but I do believe you. I‘m talking about a natural 5crd M system. Polish can also avoid the problems that I have mentioned above, but even playing Polish I prefer a WNT.

No matter how you play it, either your single raise has a large range or your jump raise will get you uncomfortably high if responder is minimum or you will have to pass a lot of 1m-openings.

If the hcps are in the long suits the hand will be worth 14 points in support, if not I would open 1N. 14-17 is easier to handle then 12-16. In 70s KSU 1m tends to be a tit stronger then today.

Ray or anybody else playing WNT will not raise with 11hcp, 5431 with 3crd support. On 1m-1M;2M Kaplan writes „Value of 15-17, high cards plus distribution, normally 4-card support, could be 3 cards (rare).“ The 3crd raise is a) rare and b) always with 15 K&R points (that is without dummy ponts) in order to be safe when we go for 3N. A hand like QJx, Kxxx, x, AQxxx (13.1 K&R) is worth 16 in support of and therefore a sound single raise, but will rebid 2 over 1.

Very interesting indeed. If you consequently adhere to it, you can expect a passed 2nd seat to be relatively balanced. 4th can balance relatively safe because there usually will be some kind of fit.
I just don‘t understand the part concerning the so-called penalty double. First of all it isn‘t really a penalty double in the sense that you expect pard to pass with few exceptions. Secondly the double gives opps more opportunities to find a better landing spot. I can remember only once going for a number in the past 7 years. We had more bad scores from 1N-2 vulnerable against a partscore.

Michael, are you deliberately misquoting?

„The auction 1m-1M-2M is awkward playing a weak 1NT opening compared to playing a 15-17 1NT opening.“ The opposite is true: playing SNT the single raise can be as low as 12hcp with 4M333 but also a distributional hand with the value of 16 points, the jump raise will have value of 17-18 then. Playing WNT the single raise has the value of 14-17 (KSU 15-17) and the jump raise 18-19. This is one of the big advantages of WNT.

I guess it‘s my own fault. I should have written „We play Woolsey against 1N and we are not going to change that. We only play against strong notrumpers, so don‘t worry about penalty doubles. All I need is your advice on strength requirements.“

In all cases 3rd/4th suit reverse or not is FG and basically a marionette (opener usually bids the next step). The only exception is 1-1;2-2 which can also be bid with 5-4 inv. Doesn‘t apply after 1-opening because we open 2 with a minimum -onesuiter.

Carefull reading would have shown me that you don‘t open unbalanced weak hands 1. That makes a difference. My original comment above was aimed at a natural 5crd M system.

Take 1-1M;2M V the minimum is 10hcp in 4M333, NV it‘s value of 13. Does that change your maximum? If not how do you cope with the enormous range if V? Do you change your requirements for 1M depending upon vulnerability? How about …3M?

It‘s not just those (in your case) 2 opening bids, but also the follow-ups after 1 and maybe 1N.

I‘m thinking about memory load, not some (silly?!) regulations.

Do all of you position-/vulnerability-dependent notrumpers realize that you play 2-4 different systems?

You can also play the same defense if you are willing to forget about the penalty X over a WNT.

See my comment upthread. I agree with the 2M raise, but prefer to use 4th suit to show the „genuine“ raise and 3M to retain its uncontested meaning. X then tends to be a misfit and can be converted to penalty. The cue is reserved for good suit, no stopper or a hand to strong for 2M.
