I see your point Bill. It is rare indeed to see someone write something like “…my position is losing yet more credibility”. I respect that.

Bill, Some perhaps many will bid 2D michaels on this hand.
But no one will bid 3S except for two players.

In certain auctions where partner has a wide range of possible hands, one has to overbid to some hopeless games because alternative approaches can lead to missing baby games.

Funny how memories come back. Someone in 2011 told me a story involving this hand as it was being being shown on vugraph. One of the very best players in the world observed to his group of friends “ With this pair, I'm betting on a club lead”. Everyone laughed until the lead was made …..

If the other two attempted misclaims can be substantiated, it lends a lot more weight to the misclaim.I have heard the same story. Be worthwhile to hear it from the horse's mouth.
3 misclaims in one day, all involving one overtrick …that is quite something !

Nedju, The top players of the world would differ from your assessments by a long way. Try polling a really strong player with international level credentials and see what their answers are..

Hanan,
The lack of competence was not enough to deter them from winning a world championship event. And knocking a few big names along the way….

There comes a time when we should all open our eyes and accept what we see for what it is. Instead of being over-invested in the possibility of one in a hundred million chance.

Roland,
Chris Willenken made a great post which I'd like to quote from
“Now, I'm not saying that everyone suspected of cheating is guilty, and I strongly believe that everyone should have his day in court. But I am saying that “innocent until proven guilty” is a legal fiction which we properly use to protect the rights of those accused during formal proceedings. It is not a license to abandon common sense in your everyday life when you're trying to decide who is trustworthy and who is not.”

Andreas, It is worth understanding that winning the 2011 World Transnationals was the starting point of their international profile. Some of these hands started the “whispers” that Larry Cohen referred to.

Bill, over the top 100 players in the world a wide variety of styles are played.
If this hand were given to the top 100 players in the world, 98 of them would bid game in way or another.
You know who the other 2 are.

I was on the losing side of this match, having played sets 2 and 3 against Fisher-Schwartz. My recollection rotated around two dodgy hands

a) The lead to 1NT with Axx clubs ; It felt like a stinker. But gave them the benefit of doubt because sometimes when you are playing well, things just seem to work out for you.

b) The 5233 hand: After the tray was pushed over the 3H bid, it came back in less than a second with 3S. And an insta pass followed. We should have called the director over this Tony and I rarely did that. This one I passed off as unethical behavior which is a long way away from cheating.

And as Ish said once the match was over a lot of our focus was on hands we could have got right. We all had our fair share so we let it all slide.

Now, looking at all these hands compiled in one hit, is a weird feeling.

Thanks Ish for putting in the work in identifying and documenting these.

If there were a large enough dataset, a simpler test would be : Percentage of hands where the opening lead hit 0/1/2 honours in partner's hand.
Declarer play versus Defence differential is not necessarily a valid indicator : especially where one player is stronger than the other, the defence efficiency will be naturally higher

Nick, A couple of hands involving F-S from the World Transnationals Final we lost to them in 2011 have recently been made fresh in my memory. Am sure there would be more action on any article I wrote on that :)
Maybe I'll do that when I write next.

Thanks for the note Sartaj

Declarer could have A9x,KJ10xxxx,AJx,void - Being passive (returning a trump) is best and hope to avoid the pressure on the run of trumps.
But he could also have something like Axx,KJ10xxxx,QJ,x - We have to get active right now and play spades before the club entry is knocked out.

On hands where declarer has a doubleton spade or partner has the SA, we rate to get another chance.

What to do ? Dont know, Still in the tank :)

ha ha good one folks. Nick, thanks for the idea though. I can try to work the HUP into another article as there are themes where it MIGHT apply. For example, when declarer starts watching the defenders' count signals, they might deliberately alter the quality of the signal.

Well done guys. For some reason I found it hard to see the (multiple) ways. I thought the whole position was legit until someone else pointed out the winning option couple of days later.
