Thanks for the replies. It seems clear that I should have called the director before bidding 4 if not sooner. By not doing so I put myself in a poor situation (either -10 IMPs for going down in the slam or +3 IMPs for making). Still sort of feel like if I'm keeping my result for 6D going down, I should get the result of either 3NT or 5D when I make the slam.

I don't think giving the other pair a procedural penalty was on the director's radar (maybe he talked to other pair in private). I don't think he was considering giving me one either, but we were rather sternly warned about what the consequences would have been had we not reported what happened.

On the actual hand I decided to play opening leader for KQ hearts and QJ of clubs, so I drew trump and took the spade finesse hoping to squeeze LHO when I don't get a club return or RHO has the 9. I don't think this is a very good line as LHO probably would lead a heart with KQ, but I ended up making when RHO discarded too many spades. Board 6

Not sure how they made 640, but it was a precision pair so I can see that if somehow it was played from the other side it could make 7 on a spade lead.

I balanced with 2, which ended up not being great when both opener and responder had a max and partner only had 1 and the auction continued P-P-X-P-P-P (board 3)

They can make game, but half the field either didn't bid it or went down.

I did not pass and partner had something like
xx AQx Kxxx AK10x
and not passing was a big missed opportunity.

I wasn't sure if Smolen should be on here since partner has not denied a four card major. Would it make sense for 3 to be staymen (in which case, what is 3/3)?

You're going to incite someone from honors to come on here and tout the free dinner and how bridge at honors is the best deal in town!

That is easy to say, but my guess is that it is harder to do so I won't judge others who have not done so having not done so myself.

I'm curious what Geoff and others thoughts on BZ are. They were on the US regional scene for a long time and no doubt played on teams with lots of top US players. Were there “whispers” about them? Were there players who refused to play with them? Is it a “stain” on the reputations of players who did play with them?

No, not a bad memory for you. I just thought we might have told you.

At the time it was upsetting, now just sort of comical/memorable. From directors perspective probably would make a good “secretary bird” thread

Ed/Yuan: If this is hand I am thinking of, that's what the director did (scoring it as doubled). The auction was absolutely terrible and the contract certainly should have been doubled, but both declarer and dummy swore it was not doubled. Unfortunately, it actually did end up affecting the outcome of the match (which unfortunately was the finals of a district GNT qualifier)

Michael: that certainly would have helped here (but can't be 100% you aren't making some sort of big brother joke).

Ok, it could just be that I'm slow and don't appreciate subtlety, but my takeaway from a cursory reading of the article and comments before it was removed was that he was accusing two Italian pairs not named Fantunes of cheating. Given that Mr. Versace felt the need to come here and defend himself, I'm not the only one “dense” enough to miss NH's point. So if NH was just trying to be clever, it seems to me that it was poorly done

Shireen,
if there were some objective definition of offensive I would agree. I'd have no issues with posts saying “you're stupid and ugly” being removed. I just have reservations about determining what is “offensive” by majority vote since this can lead to what is merely an unpopular viewpoint or provocative viewpoint being censored. This is why I voted yes.

A side note, I do not find comments to the effect of it is their site they can do what they want (and if you don't like it start your own site) to be very productive. Obviously they can do what they want, but I think they're still interested in productive input from the community

I feel like that is how the site used to work (you could downvote comments and if there were too many downvotes, your comment would be hidden, but you could still read it if you wanted)

Many people (full disclosure, myself included) believe the best general approach to investing is a passive approach that seeks to minimize fees and that most managers of money do not justify the fees they charge. As someone who manages money for a living (or has in the past), what do you think about statements like that?

“Where did anyone argue that Paul Fireman is as good as Levin/Weinstein?”

Lots of people (mostly top pros when they are talking about sponsors) talk about the importance of team chemistry. It is hard to argue with them because it is an abstract concept and the benefits of team chemistry are not something its proponents can concretely quantify.

I merely stating that if given the option, I would always bet on the world-class pair over team chemistry. It seems others disagree. I used Levin-Weinstein as an example because you stated a similar team with Levin-Weinstein replacing Fireman-Wolpert performed worse in the Bermuda bowl.

I certainly mean no disrespect to Fireman. We have a system and under this system his team won the right to represent the US in the Bermuda Bowl where they did very well. I don't know what more we could ask of him to do. Hopefully if he feels disrespected, he can take solace in his bronze medal :)

Not personally, the name sounds familiar from bridge.

I get the bridge world is fairly small (and Fireman might actually read comments on bridgewinners), but he's a very public figure in the world of bridge, why shouldn't we be able to (politely) acknowledge the fact that he is a sponsor (and not nearly as strong a player as the rest of the team)?

Justin and other top players can insist on the importance of team chemistry, but I will happily put my money on Levin/Weinstein with four top pros that hate them over Wolpert/Fireman and their current team. It is what it is though and the reality of the economics of top level bridge is such that we probably will not get many opportunities to find out.

An aside, the team with Levin/Weinstein added to it lost to Monaco in the semi-finals and Poland (with a currently under suspicion pair) in third-place match, so doesn't seem altogether fair to say they had a worse performance than the current team.

Full Disclosure: Paul Fireman is undoubtedly a much stronger player than I am

I would feel better about letting such pairs return if they offered to return, donate, do basically anything other than keep their ill-gotten financial gains. The punishment should be greater than the potential gain from committing the crime (e.g. the fines for the recent banking scandals involving Libor fixing ect were far greater than the money they made doing it)

Maybe we should also have an option to specify whether we have “skin in the game” or are just “trolls”

Do moderators have any discretion to NOT remove posts that are flagged, but do not seem to violate community guidelines (but nevertheless are flagged because they represent an unpopular viewpoint)

I think you're being rude justin. All (or most) of us want to see cheating eliminated from bridge, but not all of us our top pros who hear the whispers. I don't want a system where just because a lot of players I've heard of say someone is cheating and they present a few hands that are suspicious we throw them out. I much prefer Kit's approach and you should too if you want people to care.

The ACBl (maybe other organizations do) does not exist to serve the needs of top pros and if you expect it to use its resources to eliminate cheating (and a lot of people seem to be upset about inaction on the ACBL's part) then I think you have to do it in a way that lots of people don't find distasteful and unjust. Otherwise, why should I care (and the thousands of other ACBL members at my level or lower) care that there is cheating in the spingold?
