Love your ideas. The point is we need to freshen up the formats to engage a new audience. Make it Fun!

Thank you. Actually, this is my point. At a minimum, the league should have contacted players who have utilized the service and let them know it won't be available for Vegas. But that would assume they were trying for any small level of customer service.

Of course an adult should not be alone with a child. There are always two adults or more as part of safe sanctuary practices. This is a digression however….

I have reached out to the tournament chair. That was the first thing I did. She referred me to the gentleman with whom I spoke.

I know I started a controversy , but I am just trying to figure out what to do. I had to cancel my games in the spring because Joe had heart surgery. Don't want to cancel again.

You've summed up my understanding. The decisions they make are truly baffling. It is a stunningly shortsighted choice not to offer childcare but the decision to withhold the information feels like a betrayal to me. Then the gentleman with whom I spoke started with a litany about how they try to help each player attend the nationals. I thought I was in some alternate reality. The ACBL is the only organization that functions worse than Congress.

Hawaii was a terrible idea. Super expensive and hard to get to - entry fees or no entry fees. The BOD wanted a nice trip to Hawaii so they booked the tourney there. Don't blame the members for not going.

We did go. We had to leave by the 3rd day though because our daughter had school. TOO BAD THE MORONS REFUSE TO HOLD THE TOURNAMENT OVER THANKSGIVING WEEK SO THOSE WITH KIDS CAN ATTEND MOST OF THE TOURNAMENT! Also, they cancelled the childcare right before the tournament so we ended up playing zero sessions. SMOOTH MOVE WHIPPLE!

The league is so badly run and the Nationals run so organized so poorly, we are losing interest. Our attendance has dropped significantly. The problem the league is facing now is that once people replace bridge with other activities, it's hard to get them back. It is imperative that the league value ALL of its members, where 5 points or 50,000.

The ACBL removed the nasty post about the Comptons. I am glad about that. It was rude. Now they have a number for the hotel. It's just a general number though so plan on spending some time working through to get a person to speak with. Ask me how I know…

Randy. This tournament is the first change I have experienced. We were asked to reserve our hotel rooms a year in advance and are penalized $250. if we're cancelled. The league dropped the childcare with no notice after were have all purchased airline tickets. How you think this is correct is mystifying.

We would not have elected to attend this tournament without the childcare offering. That is all I am saying. I haven't asked you or the league to do a single thing for me. Why are you vilifying my actions?

We have changed our plans and are returning home the first Friday of the tournament. We're now know that we cannot count on the league to provide this service. It is a as simple as that. Our daughter comes first. If we're cannot make suitable arrangements for her we won't be able to play. That is sad to both my husband and me but life goes on. And the league keeps shrinking and getting older….

No, I did not register in advance. Nor have I done so for the last SIX years we have utilized the services. I think we did not use babysitting for one tournament in about 18 tourneys. I did let Donaa know in advance that we would not be attending.

To address another topic. The childcare is slow during the Fall nationals because they insist on holding the tourney after Thanksgiving week rather than during the week. Also, they chose Hawaii - both very expensive and difficult to get to…

I spoke with Jay Whipple who told me that childcare is available…the details are on the website. I looked it up, called the recommended service….the phone number for Sitters Unlimited….(808) 674-8440 is disconnected….thought everyone would get a laugh about how inept they can be.

Emma is eight. She enjoys younger kids as well. We wanted to play the first couple of days. We are leaving on Monday.

The ACBL keeps insisting on holding the Nationals when the kids need to be in school instead of Thanksgiving week. It's funny - their attendance is down considerably since they changed the schedule but the board seems more interested in serving their own desires than what is best for the membership. Compare table counts from recent Fall Nationals and those help prior in the same cities and you will see that I am right. They lose about 2 to 3 thousand tables!

Also - I love Hawaii but really, why are we going there? They are losing about 5K tables in table count from other Fall Nationals. It is simple very expensive and very difficult travel. How does that serve the membership at large? Thanks for listening to my rant Gloria!

I agree with Michael's solution. Pre-announce before entering the events. That way it is assured that all teammates are aware and can make their plans accordingly. Well said Michael.

I didn't even know we had to book the childcare in advance. I usually just text Donna. This is really weird. We are leaving to Hawaii on Sunday and planned to play the start of the Tourney….I hope we can find suitable childcare or we will just have to miss playing bridge.

We really need to hold the Fall Nationals the week of Thanksgiving to allow families with school age kids to attend. Most schools throughout the country take the entire week off now so it is a great opportunity.

We work hard to get young people to start playing and then don't cater to the idea that they will get married and have kids! We should be doing more for young adults not making it more difficult for them to play!

I am so sick and tired of the ACBL mantra “our demographic is seniors.” The only reason this is the case if the piss poor job the league had done of marketing the game. They go for the lowest hanging fruit and don't use any creativity whatsoever. If you look at other countries, plenty of young people play bridge. This means we have work to do!

Like to start with pairs - starting with a team(particularly one that requires pre registration) requires you be fully set with before arriving at the tourney. Starting with a pairs allows pairs to ‘team up’ later in the week.

I am so sad to hear of Carolyn's passing. A lovely woman and a great travelling buddy. We took a lot of side trips together at World Championships. and I really enjoyed the time we spent together. You will be missed.

I am so sad for her family's loss. My prayers go with you all.

This is a great idea Debbie. Will try to suggest it here in Houston.

How did you market the game to the parents and grandparents? what teaching tools did you recommend to them? I presume the game was taught to their kids around the kitchen table?
