Think of G3N as a 4m opening but it lets partner stop at 3NT with right hand (or bid to game or slam, knowing my entire hand).

I think many players use gambling 3NT because:
1) It is quite easy, and very well-defined
2) It is probably better than using 3NT for 25-27 balanced (which is the default bid in SAYC without discussion)

When it comes up, it may work well, it may not. It's certainly not the worst convention in the world (I would actually rate it at least above average), and given its ease of use, why not? At least for casual partnership, it's better to agree on something simple on this kind of infrequent bids, then spend more time on other more frequent bidding areas.

The article suggests “Pick your gadgets carefully. Better yet, focus on improving your play and defense” – I think that's exactly why many choose to play Gambling 3NT.

Overcaller shows 5-5, not 5-4 either way. The only “bad” case is overcaller having 6-5 (specifically longer spades) and advancer is 2-2 in them.

Eventually we'll be there. Everything goes digital, director calls will be handled by robots. Real-time broadcasts and instant analysis done by software with 100% accuracy. The participants of this youth championship may actually live to see it…

Not all recordings need to be broadcast live. Of course the real solution is to go electronic, with multiple benefits. There may be an uncomfortable feeling of it “doesn't feel like playing cards” for some, but so was the case when screens were first introduced. But, this is a separate topic and I don't mean to hijack this thread.

By the way, to construct a hand where 7 of everything makes is totally trivial. To actually encounter one in real game is not… but hardly unimaginable.

When you have all the top cards, 4-2 or 5-1 fits can easily be the ones that yield most number of tricks. The hard part is how to bid them – it not only requires pattern identification, you also need to know where trump J or even 10 are. Unless you are looking at them, it is hard to have an asking bid for those cards.

I thought they would… isn't this how those world championship books can be compiled? If we don't have the records then what are these books based on? But, I can be mistaken…

The advantage of using 4 and D+M is that you get to play 4 when advancer has that 1-suiter. I am not saying it is better or worse, just that we need to be aware of the trade-offs in each system design decision.

Well, this is right after the bad board which gave Poland 13 imps. They know they probably need it to work, and there are plenty of hands where it has at least decent chances.

Board 12 in that session is another interesting one. Played at 4 tables, two reached 3NT (one made, one went down), the other two reached 4 (one made, one went down 2 doubled). This caused swings at both matches.

In the actual match, South did the asking, so it was a bit of guesswork… which worked.

Thanks. From the worldbridge site, drilling down, there is information about board, score, contract, etc., and a link to play data, but then the link fetches “there is no play data for this match”. Just wondering whether all plays are recorded (even though not visible to me), or only those broadcast in VuGraph are archived. I'd expect the former but you never know…

What if advancer has 2-6-2-3 or 2-7-2-2?

Is there a link to all the boards played in each group (at least the KO stage)?

Why do you switch minors? Isn't the very reason being so that you can use 4 to ask for major and bid 4M with your own suit? Otherwise why not just do the “normal” 4 as both majors and 4 as D+M?

Does 2 deny 4 spades (and 3 hearts)? If that's the case, you may have secondary diamond fit (give partner 3-1-3-6 shape, which is a likely shape to double), so that suggests pulling to 4. Another possible gain is, sometimes opponents don't double you in 4, you go quietly down two while 3 is a make, you may even get a top that way (but don't hold your breath in a strong field, where you may have a choice of which zero to take).

I don't understand this. WBF servers are not hosted in China, are they? What can prevent them from posting results?

What happened at the other table? Did N-S reach slam after “normal” interference?

As I said, if we already agreed that 2NT is natural (which I dislike), I will probably pass with this hand. It is different from 1 opening on my right, which I will overcall 1NT. Now I have to bid at 2-level, my spade stopper is thin, and I know they have a good chance of setting up spade tricks. If I feel adventurous I might chance a double, but 2NT is too rich for me.
