Had a partner open 6N with a balanced 34 count, we weren't playing Kokish and he just didn't know how to find out what he needed to. Turns out my Jx xxx xxx xxxxx was good enough for the grand, as his collection included AKQx AKQ in the black suits.

Sure, the Qx is probably worthless, but I can't see not supporting with 4 trump, an ace and some shape.

West probably has a 3 overcall, but with partner already a passed hand I guess I can understand passing. East, though, has an easy double. Can I also assign some blame to North for not bidding 5? Why did he pass and give you a chance to get to your spade game?

Thanks for the votes and comments. I passed, but partner's hand was Kx Qxxx Jxxxx xx, so 4 makes since the club ace is onside. Not that we should get to game, but selling out to 3 undoubled was a big loser even though it went down one, RHO surprisingly was 2344.

Seems like either me or partner should know to complete further, so perhaps a x of 2N is a better agreement for the call.

I didn't x 2N at the time as it sounds like a hand with more defensive values than playing strength, but this is probably a better use for the call - a hand that wants to bid again.

While the voting reflects this, and was also my vote, I found this a difficult problem. It could easily be our 6 hand, losing just a . We may not be able to reach partner's hand to take black suit finesses though, and a 3 cuebid will just torture partner who clearly doesn't have much.

Since partner did not overcall, X 3N, or otherwise act it's hard to see this going down unless we can run the clubs. Would lead T at matchpoints.

Must be a BIT problem, seems pretty clear to pass.

X, the most flexible action. Raise a 3 response to 4, otherwise rebid 3N. Pard can then pull to 4 with a 5-bagger.

An immediate 3N is likely to end the auction when we may have a better strain.

Auction was fine up until West bid 5. West should not sign off, and East has too much to pass.

I like my spot cards but the shape is terrible.

Sure, you might go for a number but I can't imagine not overcalling with this.

I want to bid 2, but most of our high cards in the red suits are not likely to be working. The club void at first looks nice, but I'd much rather have Kx or something which will help set up his side suit.

I'm also in agreement with this. North should not pass 3N since his raise is based on distribution, not high cards. He has no help for partner's hearts and the spade ace rates to be facing shortness. Notrump rates to play quite poorly.

3. Where I live. Not thrilled with this, but x may get a lebensohl response into 3, and my spades are also quite weak.

Dummy likely has good spades, a club void and a source of tricks in one of the red suits. Diamonds is more likely to be dummy's suit since I'm shorter there, so I lead a heart, hoping to set up a trick before my spade is knocked out.

P. No aces, poor main suit, poor shape.

Definitely agree - West has a clear-cut keycard ask after the 3 bid.

I don't like the methods, but this hand is nowhere near good enough to take another call.

I don't see an option for all of the forcing pass topics. These can all be answered with Jay Barronen's usual advice: If you have to ask, it isn't.
