Ray I love discussions of cocaine at the table that state there should be a line. Even though it is not our drug of choice, having it readily available would certainly increase the popularity or bridge. Although I guess extasy & oxy should also be available. LOL

I can speak to Larry Flynt and producers of PokerGo - Let's start BLB - Barely Legal Bridge.

I'm not sure if I should add this to this thread or the one called answer to Sabine's question or if it is even relevant. Bridge (like chess, puzzles, learning music or foreign languages) are all considered to be performance enhancers. They enable better brain function & stave off dementia. Perhaps we need to start marketing bridge as a performance enhancer, not as a game or as a sport:)

Each time I hear of what IMHO is another idiocy by the ACBL, WBF or similar bridge organization, I feel we only have ourselves to blame. We created these groups. We voted for their personnel. Then when they produce decisions we don't like (re-admitting known cheats and excluding relatively innocent players,) we blame them instead of ourselves. (Obviously bridge players, especially older players, frequently take a variety of medications-including hormones, steroids, anti-depressants, sleep aids, mobility aids, etc. with no particular view toward enhancing bridge performance. Some may also try caffein, adderol, provigil or whatever in hopes of enhancing performance or maintaining alertness.) If we can't create organizations with standards their members agree to, shame on us. I personally would prefer to play against a pair loaded to the gills on any chemical cocktail they chose, then against a pair using covert signals. Praying for someone to start the NBA - New Bridge Association.

A key game skill is the ability to crush bad (or in this case, relatively weaker) players and teams. The importance of this skill is lost in KO formats, which emphasize the ability to grind out a small victory against a strong team and devalue the ability to destroy a weak one.

My favorite Vic Mitchell story is from a money bridge game in which his partner lead the ace of diamonds. He wanted his pard to switch suits, but his spots were T98 ( playing standard signals.) He followed with the 8, but missed the table & dropped the 8 to the floor. His pard asked what he had played & he responded, “Small diamond.”

There is a game theoretic solution to players not reporting cheats. (It is used in the honor code at West Point and some other universities.) Not only is cheating a cause for expulsion, but also observation of cheating without reporting it is as well. In law, there are penalties for those who do not report a crime, accessories after the fact. The above is based on page 220 of The Art of Strategy by Dixit and Nalebuff, which I would recommend as a fun introduction to Game Theory.

Someone should test the idea that playing is a bridge tournament is a privilege, not a right. (Entry into Nevada Casinos follows this policy, and thus blackjack counters can be barred from entry into a casino.) Another possibility is to charge convicted cheaters a substantially higher entry fee. (Men can enter the Ladies Championship at the WSOP, but must pay a 10K entry fee while women pay only 1K.) A third possibility is for directors to continually penalize during any session they play, thus insuring they never break average.

FYI The United States is NOT considered a true democracy. One rating lists us as 21st and calls us a ‘flawed democracy.’ Just consider how frequently the winner of the majority of votes for president is not elected because we use a convoluted electoral college system. Hope this doesn't get banned as controversial.

As bridge population ages, availability of restrooms becomes more important. No reason not to stagger starting times & break times (avoid crowding on elevators or restrooms.) Also current standard schedule is flat out bad. Many players have strong preference for some or all of the following: earlier start time combined with shorter break between sessions to allow early finish & nice dinner (civilized world follows this schedule,) longer times for rounds & breaks combined with shorter dinner break, longer breaks only, etc. The choice of Atlanta in August and all top events starting at 1pm were the main reasons I skipped this National.

Where are the congratulations for the robot who partnered him? Those poor bots never get the credit they deserve.

My own tendency to alert anything that might be alertable, and not worry if it wasn't.

RETHINK THIS POLICY: or at a minimum mark comments that may be found politically or that use language that some find offensive, but leave readers who feel tough enough the ability to read the comments.

Be nice to just create a generic alert procedure, so that we'd know what to do without memorizing a lot of useless stuff.

I once was penalized in a poker tournament when a floorman answered a question or made a ruling, which I thought his answer was exceedingly stupid and clearly wrong. I said if I could remember which term of moron, idiot, and imbecile implied the lowest intelligence, I say what I thought of his statement.

If nothing else, this thread convinces me that bridge players have too much time on their hands.

I think it is far worse to steal an entire article, as in Karen's case, than to grab an intro from another source without giving appropriate credit, but using it to lead to original bridge content. Neither is proper, but the former is worse. And, of course, actually cheating a bridge is way worse, and should call for language this site might censor.

Perhaps it is time to rethink site guidelines. I find myself thinking that some of the censored comments might be more interesting that a lot of the others. Perhaps they could be marked X-Rated or Political, but click if you want to read anyway. (I love the fact that Bill Maher was invited to Berkeley for an anniversary of the Free Speech Movement, but cancelled because they thought he'd speak too freely.)

No one has mentioned other situations (along with subminimum.) I would also not make a support double when I had another obvious bid like 2S with strong 4-3-5-1 or 2N with a hand like Kx xxx AKJTxx AQ.
