high spades, high hearts, h ruff, if nothing is right and we are still alive, A, Q ruffing finesse.

again, depends who was on lead it might be tempting to play low diamond and/or finesse Q on the left

2nd hand is actually ‘harder’ because it takes only one mechanical error to go down (can happen to anyone, albeit rarely).

On the 1st hand you have three tempos to sober up (high diamond x3… oh, I might as well try clubs), so I wouldn't bet on anyone to go down unless they've had at least a quart of whiskey.

Benoit, for the part of the comment after Lol:

I hope that expert who bids 5 and then doubles knows his odds and the meaning of “almost sure” because it's around 70:30 (a bit more if you put 7th club) in favor of longer diamonds.

“If partner had something like KQ of clubs he could bid 4C/5C instead of 5S”

If partner had something like void he could bid 4D/5D instead of 5S.

Next time I sit in with a random expert and he bids 5 then double with a diamond void and I hold 33 in minors on the lead he'll explain me the lightner double convention.

@Gonzalo: Playing J will blow your chances for sq/endplay if S holds something like Axxx/xxx/Q9xx/xx (edgy, but not impossible and that would approve N's opening on 4 count w/65). On the other hand I think there's close to 0% chance that N led away from Q.

@Steven - I'm aware of that, but imagine yourself holding AJxxxx/xxx/10/Jxx and leading 10 in tempo. And you've seen a few deals before where opps had 22 in , or where they had long 's and no ace etc. And by itself 10 is an awkward card to lead. I'd be highly suspicious…

Would N really lead from a singleton while holding A?

Writing notes similar to this makes a lot of sense.

This actually occurred to me (bd12 open room):
http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&linurl=http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/vugraph_linfetch.php?id=32609

I opened in 1st 1 with Jx/A109xx/J/KQxxx, got 4 () on my left,my pd bid 4NT (at the time I wasn't even sure if it was RKC or cue but I knew he had to have at least 2 aces, ctrl and some more for both). I responded 5 and immediately whispered (yes, a note would be better) to my RHO (screens were on) that I will bid 6 over 5*. Of course, there was a delay over 5 at the other side of the screen and my pd bid 5.

Without a note, it would be very problematic to bid after this. So IMHO, a note saves nerves and resources

*edit: actually I might have told him I'll raise any heart bid a level higher

bd8 - i think S just signaled honor with 8, offering an entry for a subsequent trump return, as most experts would do
