1-(3)-Dbl-(P)
3-(P)-4

What would this be and would it be at all appropriate on this hand?

We do have a multitude of GF bids with spades :)

4 over 2 obviously

2N-3
3-3
?

3 and 4 are both some sort of spade slam try

2N-3
3

It is worth noting that we playing aggressive preempts NV i.e 5+card suits. Ergo we need definition in invitational hands.

2N-3
3 are not the same auction……

We have
2N-3
3 = Any slam try if we want to set spades below the game level.

If we want to play in 4…..we just bid it

We play our weak two response structure ergo:

2 = Nat NF; constructive
2N = Clubs or any slam invite or a choice of games
3 = Diamonds
3 = Invite with
3 = Natural
3 = Nat NF; constructive

I agree with Niall (first time those words are out of my mouth)

My problem lay partially in the fact that whilst 4 was an option it also wasn't…. This was ably demonstrated by Niall afterwards when he said: “I think you should bid 4

Hi,
a) Split range flannery

b) This is the first time I have played it and only with one partner. Reasoning behind it is system dependent. Our GF relays start with 1N ergo 1 deals with most forcing NT types in a Welland-Auken relay style.

c) View is that it works well (although early days). The only issue is that you are virtually forced to 3X on a hand that belongs at the 1/2 level. On the flip side it is great at winning the partscore battle as well as all the other traditional Flannery (dis)advantages. Have had one nice auction:
2 - 2 - (3)
3 - 4

Opener had a 4702 18 count (3 showed diamond shortage with 6). At the other table a more proactive lower auction propelled them to the poor slam.

d) Atm our structure is very simple but considering the rest of the systems complexity that isn't a bad thing:

2 - (P) - 2N - (P) - ?

3/3 = Shortage (then 3/3 = Invite, 4 = slam try, 4 = slam try)
3 = 4522 10-12 minimum (4/4 = slam try with major)
3 = 4522 13-14 maximum (ditto)
3N = 4522 18-19 (ditto)

2 - (P) - ?

3/3 = Natural forcing

e) One alternative idea I have toggled with is:
2 - (P) - ?
3 = Signoff in clubs
3 = Single suited Minor GF (then 3 asks: 3 = , 3N = NF etc)

Can't 1N quietly go 1 off and 2 make?

Nothing to technically add which hasn't been pointed out from above. Nice defence btw.

I will note though that I was in the club that night (not in the duplicate) and saw the incident occur from afar. My thinking as to why they said “director” multiple times and in potentially a louder than normal voice might well be because the director was in a different room.

I would also point out that whilst you say you are protecting peoples anonymity a quick google will find the hand and the players. If you truly stand by this statement then you should not have given so much surrounding detail.

Ethic's issue (I was not at the table):
Double takes 300 and a 8imps. West tanked over the 4 bid to which N/S got very annoyed that East thought and then doubled. I think this poll demonstrates that Dbl is not taking the hesitation into account
