I was sitting North on this deal:
My 1♣ opener can be as few as one club, 11+ hcp no better bid. It is forcing.
The 1♠ response is natural and my 2NT shows 18/19 hcp.
My partner bid 3♣ and West asked what it means. I replied "asking if I have 4 hearts or 3 spades".
West then said "So nothing about clubs then?". To which I obviously replied "No".
I showed my heart suit and partner rebid 3NT implying they have 5 spades.
What do you do now?
The opps were not a strong pair but seemed a bit 'full of themselves'.
I could have called the director but decided not to.
The room contract was obviously going to be 4♠ but I was sitting there with ♣KJ9 and was pretty sure I would get a club lead.
So I passed 3NT.
East led ♣Q and I nearly fell off my chair!
See next page for the full hand.
I won the opening lead in hand, crossed to dummy with a spade and finessed the ♥10, losing to East's K.
East returned ♣6 and West had a quandary. If they take the Ace now that is all they get, so they ducked!
3NT+3 was a World and Olympic record for the hand.
(I did inform the director later).
Plus... it's free!
