Bridge Arithmetics: 7 + 8 = 9

Every play textbook shows how to play K9xx opposite AJxx or K9x opposite AJxxx for one loser if the suit splits 4-1. A recent hand reminded me of a less known play when you hold split 7 and 8. 6 opposite 8 and 7 will also do the trick, so it also holds 7 + 8 + 6 = 9.

There is a difference though - having 9 gives you always three tricks; the spot combinations shown here only imply the best play for three tricks, so perhaps '=' should be replaced by '~='
