about me

My bridge motto: “Constant effort and frequent mistakes are the stepping stones of genius” -- Elbert Hubbard

I started playing bridge for the first time 5 years ago. After a year of trying to learn on my own with friends, I started taking bridge classes where I met a woman who talked to my about being in her practice duplicate group. She asked me if I played “transfers”, of which I had no idea what those were, and then she promptly suggested I might not be ready for the group! She guided me to the Barbara Seagram book 25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know. Six months later having memorized 95% of the book I told her I was ready to join! Declarer play, what’s that? My goal since then has been for my declarer play to catch up with my convention savvy, and when it does, well, watch out Fred!

I am keenly interested in promoting the game of bridge and helping those who are beginning to play. I am a big advocate of the mentor programs and believe that we should all be a part of them, helping each other to become better bridge players. It does not matter whether one chooses a long term mentorship or a periodic game with a less experienced player.

I am a believer that the challenge of playing good bridge exceeds the thrill of any victory. And that good sportsmanship is as important as the game itself!

As a member of our Unit Board, I volunteered to run a mentoring program. I researched the internet for ideas and found an interesting concept being used in Florida. I modeled my program after their idea however added having a written script with the help of Shelagh Paulsson (shep). I invited local teachers to lecture before each session for 30 minutes. Other clubs have adopted this method successfully. I started with 14 tables and grew it to 27 after only 3 months into the program. The following year, I partnered with Howard Schutzman (hondo717) and we created amazing celebrity programs with audio and visual software over the internet with some of our best teachers of our time. We have programs from Eddie Kantar, Jerry Helms, Barbara Seagram, Marty Bergen and Ron Klinger. If you are interested in our programs, check out these sites:
