about me

Bridge has been my favorite hobby for more than fifty years. Many of my friends from the early years have gone on to bridge stardom, but my accomplishments have been more modest. I have given back to the game as a director, district recorder, vugraph operator, teacher, and in other volunteer roles. Most of my friendships have their roots at the bridge table.

When I am playing really well I am about half as good as I would like to be.

United States of America

RIP Harold Lilie
Life will be less without Harold. We met when Harold visited Bart Bramley, etc. back in the '60s at MIT and really became friends when we both were living in Las Vegas 26 years ago. Harold was always cheerful, had truly funny bridge stories, and was knowledgeable in so many ...
Two over one GF game tries
Sorry, I should have specified that 3C was a help suit game try and might be xxx.
Thanks, Fred Gitelman
I first spoke to Sheri after buying Bridge Base or Bridge Base II and called their office with a question. After moving to Fred & Sheri's neighborhood in Las Vegas, I would occasionally bump into Fred when we were out walking and he was always gracious and pleasant. Eight years ...
Who should vote for ACBL board members?
Our board members are concerned about the future of bridge and agreed to schedule additional meetings to meet candidates. They listened and asked relevant questions of the candidates. There are unit members who have more experience than our board, but how can we make sure only knowledgeable members vote? Maybe ...
Who should vote for ACBL board members?
We seem to have gotten off the topic of how we should elect our ACBL leadership, not that the discussion of unit finances isn't of interest. My belief is that the dues returned to the units is less than $4 per member, per year. On the original question of ...
Who should vote for ACBL board members?
Steve, I commend your listing of the failings of the current structure. I would suggest that if we limited voting rights to only those who have posted to this thread we could elect an effective BOD in the next thirty days. The problem, as Ray has pointed out and I ...
Who should vote for ACBL board members?
As someone who has served at various times in various capacities over more than fifty years of ACBL membership, I can tell you that the vast majority of players haven't a clue about what is involved in running the league. Unit boards members are isolated from other unit boards ...
Who should vote for ACBL board members?
While I not sure the current method is fine, my belief that the other choices are worse. The ACBL has some very real survival issues, but our headquarters and national board seem to be oblivious. As others have pointed out, very few of our members are aware of the problems ...
ACBL Elections Forum Created
I would like to see candidates list what they see as the issues confronting our game and what they plan to do about it if elected.
ACBL Membershp Follies
My experience with head tournament directors is that they lean over backwards to minimize the number of directors working each session. This was true years ago when I was a tournament chair in NH, and it is true today in Las Vegas. I assume that the director fees charged the ...
