about me

Live in downtown Decatur, the most progressive city in Georgia. Love National League baseball, arts, and interesting dining, but bridge is my passion. Started playing in college but have had several long layoffs while I pursued other interests. Recently returned to playing serious bridge and would like to establish some partnerships; maybe I can become as good as I was when I was 30. Occasional vugraph commentator. ACBL Tournament Assistant.

Country
United States of America

Favorite Conventions
Favorites are Landy, mixed raises, transfer lebensohl, 3C puppet after 1NT, and aggressive preempts when not vulnerable. High tolerance for complexity in regular partnerships: Good/Bad 2NT; Transfers after transfers; Negative doubles at 2- or 3-level after we open 1NT; Negative double of 1 heart shows 4+ spades; 3 over 1 is invitational; Jacoby 2NT is limit raise +; 1M - 2C is 2+ game forcing; Reverse Flannery; Transfers through 2M-1 after they double our 1M opening or overcall; Meckstroth adjunct; (1M) - Pass - (2M) - 2NT = Michaels; 3rd/lowest leads versus suits or in partner's suit versus NT. I am very flexible and generally prefer to play whatever makes partner most comfortable. See my "Modern 2/1" convention card to see gadgets that I prefer.

Convention Chart Revisions
Leads and Carding: 'It is not permitted to “pre-define” the spots as being high or low (such as 234 is always low, 567 always middle, etc.) except on the first-discard.' Am I missing something? If third-hand has shown length (usually defined as 6+) in the suit led, it has been ...
Bob Simkins's bidding problem: KQJ4 842 Q8 AK86
I tend to agree with you Steve. The guideline 75% of the player's peers has often been used by directors and committees, and probably more than 80% of his peers would bid 3. However, the Laws do not mention the 75% guideline but say that a player may ...
Bob Simkins's bidding problem: KQJ4 842 Q8 AK86
In fact, Tom, there were No matchpoints left to lose. Two pairs played 3 and six pairs bought it for 2. Apparently only two players felt that 95 A10965 K52 J95 was good enough to double the transfer.
Bob Simkins's bidding problem: KQJ4 842 Q8 AK86
I have to admit that I was dozing off during the break in tempo and did not notice it until partner brought it up and called the director after the 3 bid. I expected the auction to continue "All pass" and was primarily concerned with whether my solid citizen ...
Bob Simkins's bidding problem: KQJ4 842 Q8 AK86
Thank you all for your excellent comments. Of course, as is often the case in these "you hold" problems, there is more to the story. I might have posted the continuation as another bidding problem, but I am mainly interested in your comments and opinions. I was the South player ...
Bob Simkins's bidding problem: KQJ4 842 Q8 AK86
So 3 is a transfer back to partner; I like it.
Bob Simkins's bidding problem: KQJ4 842 Q8 AK86
I think you misread the bidding, Kieran.
Starting Times and Playing Schedules
That's what we need: pay more money; play fewer boards. District 7 is already doing that. It won't be long before a standard session will be eighteen boards. How low can we go?
Starting Times and Playing Schedules
They are so much more civilized in Santa Clara (and Pittsburg and Dallas).
Starting Times and Playing Schedules
I tried one of those Florida regionals (Palmetto). I decided to swipe left and go home after two days of the miserable schedule.
