about me

English club player, average club standard.  President of my club because I think I can fix anything!

\n

Newly qualified club TD, just gaining experience.

\n

Love the game and always trying to improve.  Have played for over 50 years - next year I will be good.

\n

I play 2/1 with my regular partner, very much in the current Italian style with Transfer Walsh and 2!C as 18-19 balanced (same transfers).  Unusual in England.

\n

Retired in 2008 after selling the business - how about that for timing, right at the top of the market!  25 years of management experience in professional business services companies.

\n

I'm the classic polymath, broad but shallow knowledge.  BSc Electronics, MBA, BA History and currently studying for a MA in Military History (just for entertainment).

\n

So I know nothing but can manage anything.  Now too old and cold and settled in my ways to be useful.  But if you want an opinion ...

What is an Expert in EBUland?
I oscillate between King and Ace and I'm definitely not an expert! I don't know all the Ace players but those I do know, having played against them or kibbed them, are in my opinion experts. That's where I'd set the expert level. One ...
Transfers to 1 Club now allowable in ACBL Open / Open+ Charts even if not Strong & Artificial
It's amazing that anyone would think of not allowing them!
Invite with 8 points?
Craig Living in weak NT land (12-14) it would be interesting to know if the same applies regarding inviting with 11.
Comparable Call?
I recently attended an EBU "Advanced Director Training" course - it's one up from "Club Director Training". We looked at Comparable Calls and the key explanation from the course notes is: "The key question is would all the hands that made the comparable call have made the withdrawn call. Be ...
2019 Open European Championships Thread
I'm surprised people don't know the Hackett twins! They are part of a famous bridge family. The father Paul was part of the World Seniors winning team in 2010(?), the twins regularly play for England and are World Life Masters, and Justin's wife Barbara has won the ...
Time to simplify the laws?
The game is slowly dying, something that makes me rather sad. However, I don't see any reason to accelerate the process. :-)
Honolulu BRP 7NT Lead Discussion
Anybody who accuses their opponents of being unethical should be castigated.
Multi 2D/Mini-Multi 2D and the new ACBL convention charts
This debate seems very odd to those of us who play elsewhere. At my club, in England, we have pairs who play Polish Club, Standard American, 2/1 and a variety of forms of Acol including Acol Multi-2. (Precision has disappeared sadly.) Of these I think only Polish Club ...
The History of History (Part 1)
Excellent article highlighting the difficulties of dealing with cheats.
