Does UI have to be helpful to count?
I agree that the laws shouldn’t force the losing action on South (whether pass or bid 4 is right, you can’t choose the successful logical alternative). But for me, the S hand is simply not a gf response. I don’t believe it. So having made your bid ...
Does UI have to be helpful to count?
In 2019 the S hand is not a gf. Maybe 50 years ago when we played 13 point minimum openings.
Ron Steele's bidding problem: A62 KT52 98432 3
I respond 5 We haven’t any agreement on what this shows but I trust partner will figure it out. If playing rubber for money I would assume a void splinter and sign off in 5

Another idea to improve system compliance
I’m sure it’s different in other places, but here in New Zealand my system card sits either under my scorecard or scrunched up in my pocket for the duration. Most sessions nobody looks at it or asks for it. It would be rare indeed if it was consulted ...
Gazzilli Question
Thanks for the responses. I am in a new partnership, so we are still in the research, discussion and experimental phase. So we are not wedded to any particular treatments. In the sequence 1 1NT : 2 would be 5/4 11-15HCP and 3H 5/5 15-16HCP. I’m ...
ATB
For those bemoaning Easts lack of a second Spade, if you swap dummy’s 4th Spade for a Diamond 2 is still cold (although now we probably have to play 2NT to get a plus). Even 1 off Vul might be OK unless we get doubled.
Gazzilli Question
Thanks Bob. This seems to have some merit. I will do a bit more research.
Gazzilli Question
It could be awkward if responder has 4 only and too much to pass 2. We can’t now agree below game, so might miss some slams, perhaps. But against that, how often does responder have 5 or 6 and 8-11 but can’t bid over ...
