Brad, Old school thinking would always consider adverse vulnerability quality of suit and position. For me, therein lies much of the beauty of the game. Considering all options and settling on one that makes the most sense to you and hopefully your partner.

RR: Right you are. But it is disciplined as to the quality of the suit if not the length. It is just my choice of bids not liking 1 diamond and not liking pass.

Perhaps you should downgrade the 12HCPs to 11 given that qx is of questionable value. And, I would do it every time. I have tricks in diamonds and little prospects in the other suits. To each his own.
