about me

In 1982 I received a National beginner's award, Senior Master of the Year. The following year I won the first of two North American Swiss. (1983 and 1987). In 2001 I moved to Canada to be with my future husband, Martin Caley. After winning Canadian Women's Team Trials (2007 and 2013), I played for Canada in the Venice Cup in Shanghai (2007) and again in Bali (2013).

Over the years I have enjoyed the fabulous opportunity I have had to play with some truly great players. These have included Bob Hamman, Bobby Goldman, Mark Lair, Mike Lawrence, Roger Bates, Dorothy Truscott and Charlie Coon.

Possibly the nicest compliment I’ve ever received was from Mike Passell when he said to me, “If you could play on a team of Sylvia times 4 you would do very well.”

Board 12 from the 05/30/2015 Common Game
Dear Craig, I defended this hand with Barbara Saltsman. My partner lead her 4th best spade. The dummy held four spades T9xx. I don't think that the play of the Jack is automatic at trick one. I played the S6 and declarer won the Queen. Martin Caley often says ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
Jan, What do you think is the correct course of action? Would you agree to discarding the CoC? Would you amend the CoC to say that 4 is an acceptable number of teams? Would you amend the CoC to move the deadline back to only two months prior to the ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
The (Women) players meeting was the last input that the players had. I really don't care that the Board is primarily male. I apologize if that comment was offensive and I'm certainly willing to withdraw that part of the comment. It was probably simply an outburst in the ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
Dear Jeff, As for the phrase, "something doesn't seem right", I don't think it was right for a Board of Directors to erase the CoC and ignore the Women involved. This is not about fish. It's about Women. It would have been fine with me to run ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
The CBF scheduled the 2013 meeting. In attendance at this meeting I believe were: Francine Cimon, Joan Eaton, Katie Thorpe, Sandra Frazer, Pamela Nisbet, Hazel Wolpert, Karen Cumpstone, Ina Demme, Isabelle Brisebois, Samantha Nystrom, Sylvia Caley, Sondra Blank, Linda Wynston, Julie Smith, Susan Peters, Leslie Thomson, Peggy McGregor, Linda Connell ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
Thank you so much for entering this conversation! 2012 - I remember it well. That was the year that my dear friend Julie Fajgelzon was unable to play because she was hospitalized with terminal cancer. I convinced the event organizers to change the posted team name of our team to Fajgelzon ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
I have no problem with the idea of having an IMPed team trials in Kingston. I also have no problem with listening to the other voices in the crowd. As close to perfect as possible would be reopening team trial registration for Kingston (the venue that Nadar insists is wanted ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
That would mean that the Canadian's International Women's Team would be selected by committee.
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
Samantha, thanks for taking the time to comment. You are correct that 2014 was the first opportunity for women to play in a CNTC and a CWTC but Calgary is a long drive for many of us. I think that it's relevant to note that in 2015 Pamela Nisbet ...
2015 Canadian Women's Team Trials Cancelled
Nadar some of your FACTS are just WRONG. Pamela Nisbet and Brenda Bryant had scheduled vacation to play in Kingston. No one expected these trials to be cancelled. Your published CoC did not say "we could open registration for an IMP pairs contest". To the contrary they said " if fewer ...
