2011 Bermuda Bowl: Semifinal Day 1
(Page of 2)

The USA 1 vs USA 2 match was neck and neck, until USA 2 went on a 49-0 run to end the 3rd segment. TheITALY vs NETHERLANDS match has been low-scoring with excellent bridge being played by both teams and remains a 1-IMP match! Here are a couple problems the players faced during the 2nd segment.

We have all been defending a slam and hoping for a lead. Well, partner reads your mind and leads the 10. Declarer plays the Q and you win, but should you try to cash your other honor? If not, what do you shift to?

The problem format may have tipped you off, but at the table it is difficult not to try to cash another spade after the N-S auction. This is in fact what Martel tried at the table. Declarer ruffed and now easily had 12 tricks.

Sementa did well to lead a diamond, especially as North-South open a club with most balanced hands. Double-dummy, declarer can prevail by leading a club to the queen and keeping West off lead. Then declarer can cash his winners and endplay West in diamonds to lead away from the k, but this is double dummy. In reality declarer took another reasonable line that failed.
