An incredible bid my partner made
(Page of 2)

Peter and I were playing in the finals of a national team game against a good pair. When the opponents are having a long, involved auction, I often sit back like a blob without paying too much attention until the auction is over. Fortunately my partner, Peter Weishel, was completely tuned in when our opponents had a relay auction with every bid alerted. 3♦ was passed around to him and Peter thought and thought and thought, and after what seemed like an eternity, he produced the 4♥ card. I almost fell out of my chair, but eventually I looked at my hand. The bad news was I had I had almost a complete Yarborough, but the good news or so I thought was I had 5-card trump support.

The auction had given Peter a lot of information. His LHO had a weak hand with diamonds and no 4-card major and his RHO had shown a good hand with short hearts so he knew I had to have at least 5 hearts. My hand was a big disappointment because I could have had a 6-card heart suit or my known 5-card holding could have been a bit stronger in fact the contact would have been cold if I had as little as the K♥. Although I had very few high card points with a very disappointing heart holding we were still cold for 4♥ if they make small defensive error.

Peter got the Q♦ lead so how could he take 10 tricks? It sure is be tempting to lead a spade toward dummy, but that play will always fail. RHO would win the trick and what else would he do but return but trump. It doesn’t matter what you do the contract is doomed. If you win the A they can negotiate a club ruff whereas if you duck it is very easy for LHO to win the K and return a second trump. You need to pull one round of trump to make the contract, so Peter led a low heart at trick two. If they duck their K, you can come to 10 tricks. The Q♥ is the vital entry which allows you to lead a club towards your hand. Now you can duck a spade and there is nothing they can do to avoid going -790.
