Bidding Box Jury: Grumpy Extended McKendrick (GEM)

McKendrick is a 2S asking bid opposite a 1NT opener which asks opener to rebid 2NT with a minimum hand and 3C with a maximum.

It is used to assess the possibility of a NT game or slam and also as a weak takeout to a minor. Some common sequences are 1NT-2S-2NT-p,  1NT-2S-3C-3NT, 1NT-2S-2NT-3C-p, 1NT-2S-3C-3D-p

However, if you have a strong hand with one or both majors opposite a 1NT opener you have a choice to make: do I use Stayman or McKendrick?

GEM lets you do both at the expense of having to find another method to make a weak t/o to diamonds. Its simply a case of responder bidding 3D after the response to the 2S inquiry to ask if opener has a 4 card major, 3NT denies.

We already used 1NT-2NT to show both minors; now it shows both minors or long diamonds. Opener simply bids their longer minor, or diamonds if equal length. This has the added benefit of right-siding a good proportion of 3D contracts (McKendrick always wrong-sides these).
