Boss Battle
(Page of 5)

Every year our local regional holds a four session pair game (two qualifying sessions, two final sessions). Most of the visiting pros play KOs, but the field is still the second best of the year (after the NAP final). In the first session of the finals I sat by for this board against the top seed:

At matchpoints the boss suit is better than notrump, but with the bad trump break 2N makes and 3S goes down. West said he had wanted to bid 2N. I'm pretty big on foreshadowing, so I kept his witty remark in mind throughout the rest of the session.

This board was the companion to the last board. 1C may be short with a balanced 13-15 HCP. 2N was natural and forcing, ostensibly denying a major. They led and continued hearts. Guessing the hearts lets you make nine tricks in spades or notrump, so +400 scored well. I made no remark, witty or otherwise.

I just couldn't open this hand. I certainly couldn't bid spades. I definitely didn't pick up the spade suit. I did make 3N on a diamond lead then a strip squeeze, against a many time NABC champion. After he led from CK his partner suggested he should have kept a heart as a safe exit. Some found that more entertaining than others.

On this board I starting drifting away from the field. I didn't want to play in spades, but couldn't afford to miss a 10 or 11 card fit, so I tried Stayman. Maybe West should have bid 3H, but she definitely would have doubled a 3H transfer by me. The field was in spades making five. Pard had a migraine (she's been married to me for too long...) so she misguessed on the opening diamond lead then pitched a spade from dummy after miscounting the suit, but still got a 25 on a 25 top for +660. I know better than to remark when she declares.

If anyone is interested, I can dig up a few hundred similar deals playing against robots on BBO. None of my remarks to the robots are printable on a family oriented site.
