Obviously partner has a diamond trick to cash.  How do we know whether to give partner a trump promotion, or cash out?  I seem to recall reading somewhere that some experts have an agreement in this situation that partner cashing the diamond before leading the club means one thing and not cashing means the other, but would like to know if there is a consensus approach to this.

EDIT:  What actually happened was that I tried giving a trump promotion.  Declarer ruffed high, drew the last trump, and the diamond trick went away when declarer (who was 7-2-2-2) played A and then K, dropping my queen, and then pitching the losing diamond on the J.
