Chris Owen RIP

It is with great sadness I report the death of my son at the tender age of 32.

Chris obtained a history degree at Hull University and trained with Price Waterhouse Coopers to qualify as a Chartered Accountant

Together mainly with John Atthey he represented England juniors many times between 2005 and 2011. They were the top UK pair in both the European Championships they participated.

He won too many competitions to list in both England and Scotland mainly with John or me but also Malcolm Oliver, Damian Hassan, Geraint Harker , Charles Outred, Tom Dessain  to mention just a few.

In 2011 the North East won the Tollemache  the EBU teams of 8 competition which attracts the majority of the top English players.

The top eight teams from the first weekend qualify for an all play all second weekend. We were rank outsiders but Chris and John kept bringing back outstanding results against top class players. One member of the team said not only did Chris play well but as the youngest member of the team he encouraged the rest of the team to play their best game.

Tom Townsend wrote a fitting tribute to him in yesterdays Daily Telegraph.

My wife and I are so grateful at the level of support and good wishes we have received from the bridge community and humbled by being told about the positive impact he had on so many lives.

Rest in Peace my dear son my great friend. Life will never be the same again.
