Analysis by Fred Ferguson

This week starts off with an interesting deal. Some tables might actually pass this deal out, but I'm betting if North with 11 high card points , 2 Quick Tricks and a good rebid does not open this deal 1, East with 11 hcp, 2 QT and 7 losers will open it 1.

Bidding: In the auction here, North passes and East opens the bidding 1. Some might overcall 1 with South's hand, but overcalling with a bad suit is just not good bridge and K9863 is not a good, South passes. West responds 1NT (either forcing or natural) and North who passed originally, backs into the auction making a Takeout Double . East is now off the hook and having bid all his values passes and South now bid his spades with 2. West might consider bidding diamonds at 2, but not at 3 and with East limiting his hand with a pass, West passes.

Play: On opening lead of the 9 from West declarer (South) jumps up with dummy's A and goes after trump leading the J trying to avoid a heart ruff. West wins the Q and returns the 8 which declarer wins in hand with K. Crosses to the A in dummy and leads another spade 4, which East wins with the A and then cashes the winning Q, good defense. East/West is still entitled to the A holding the contract to making 3.
