This deal threw up a quirk that I dont recall having seen before. Nothing really technical but just an oddity.

I received a top diamond lead against 4 and ruffed it as RHO echoed with the J to show a doubleton. I led a low club towards dummy and LHO hopped up with the king. RHO was the sort of player who could encourage with the 8 even on my lead so she did so. (I'm not sure what body language achieves that result but she did so and LHO got the message, continuing with a low club for a second diamond. I ruffed low, and after some though pitched a heart on the Q as the 10 appeared to my left, cashed K and A and led a third heart.

RHO pitched a diamond and this was the position after I had ruffed in dummy.

It was only at this moment that I realized that if I took a trump finesse and it lost, with a trump coming back, I would go down. So I had to ruff a diamond -- but in doing so would create a one-suit squeeze of a sort I'd never seen before. If I ruff low then ruff a heart to dummy I will be able to lead a trump but will have to win in hand and lose a trump to RHO if they began with 3-4-2-4 pattern. If I ruff high then after ruffing a heart to dummy when I lead 10 RHO can cover from K8x/K7x and score a trump at trick 13.

Of course with RHO actually being 2-4-2-5 it didnt matter -- and the spade finesse was offside anyway. But I wonder if there was anything I could have done to pick up Kxx onside without risking the contract?
