competitive methods

This is a general question about bidding in competition.  Let's say opponents are bidding one suit, our side is bidding another.  Depending on my hand type, I can

a) cue bid, which will force to game and turn forcing passes on if opponents compete, or

b) jump to game (or perhaps make other bids in certain auctions), showing a distributional hand and not turning on forcing passes.

I think this is pretty standard.  Any objections?

What does it mean if I make one of the distributional bids, opponents compete, and I double?
