E-W are a competent pair, but West has only been playing duplicate for a few years, and he is among the many at our club who talk and make comments during the bidding and when defending.

When East bid 4D, West said, "Transfer. At least, I think it's a transfer. I mean, I hope it's a transfer."

North passed and East bid 5C. And at this point, I called the director. (Comment on my timing, please, as well as on the poll, because I do wish I had called before West bid.)

The director asked to be called back after the hand if we wanted him to make a ruling.

After a spade lead, 5D made.

I did call back. And, after consulting two good players, one of whom is a retired National Director, and both of whom agreed that East was allowed to bid 5C, the score stood.

Although I disagree with the ruling, I don't fault the director, because he did consult players whose opinions I respect. And I don't fault the opponents, who do not have experience with the laws and who are very pleasant opponents.

But I was surprised at the outcome and I would appreciate your participation in this poll and would appreciate your comments on your reasoning, whether or not you agree with the ruling. Please know, that, if you disagree with any part of this, that I would like you to show respect for the director, for those polled, and for our opponents.

I also would like to know if you agree with my husband that I should not have called the director.

And, I would like to know if your club, in an effort to keep the atmosphere friendly, expects players to ignore table talk and comments.  Or, does your club make an effort to educate the players about such matters?

Thanks.
