Alan Kahn showed me a deal yesterday which reminded me of a theme I'd only seen once before.

Everybody's 3NT from Mon 13th's Common Game, and nobody made it.

At our table I led a diamond as South and declarer wasted a club entry early to dummy. My partner got in with a club and cashed out for down one.

How does everyone fancy their chances on a heart lead?

As I'm sure recent readers of the post re Amalya Kearse may work out, the idea in 3NT is to force the opponents to lead a black suit for you and that entails some devious play in the heart suit. On eg the lead of H10 win the jack and duck a diamond and when the defenders return a heart, duck the king!

Then you can duck the next diamond, win the heart and play ace and another diamond to force North to win and lead a black suit for you.

The same play applies on both a diamond and heart lead in one variation or another.
