Gamesmanship in the Vanderbilt

In the Nickell/Ventin match, one of the Ventin players opened 2D multi. Meckwell called the director as opponents do not have the required written defense. What do you think of this sort of the tactic?

On one hand, I believe Rodwell wrote one of the defenses to Multi and Meckwell certainly can handle it. On the other hand, if you play multi in ACBL tournaments you are required to have a written defense.

Ultimately they played the board and were allowed to make the multi bid, but I think in past the directors have ruled in Meckwell's favor and forbid their opponents from using multi.
