This match was an interesting one to watch as the Coles' team steadily caught up with the Hoffman team and were leading by 10 imps after match 7. This included a 9 imp penalty for a phone ringing in the playing area violation. The Hoffman team won the battle by 10.1 imps.

Despite my sympathy for East/West, North/South's bidding in hand above demonstrated the grit that is needed in our Women's teams to perform well internationally. Psyching in Australian Women's bridge is uncommon and we are therefore ill-prepared for it.

If it was 1-P-1-?, a cue of responder's suit is often played as natural. How do you handle it in the situation above? Is there any hope for East/West getting to game, let alone slam, in a suit that has been bid as natural and forcing at the 2 level? Is a 3 cue by East natural/Michaels/stopper ask? X would be take out so it seems East/West are screwed. E/W reached 6 at the other table. It was a brilliant psych by Jessica Brake following an aggressive opening and hasty exit by Susan Humphries.

Experts, any words of advice for the ill-prepared?
