The result was 5 making. (No comment.) Club game; A players real As, B players solid, C players all over the place. EW are one of the consistently best matchpoint pairs in the Unit. They will win their direction 60% of club games, and will scratch high in sectional and regional pairs, with a good share of sectional firsts.

E took a lonnnnng time to pass over 4. May W take a call?

This hand is one of the rare occasions upon which I have polled in a club game, because I have a great deal of sympathy with a positive action by W. But I consistently harp on hesitations, and I tend to bias hesitation rulings in favor of the non-offenders.

I polled five A players in this game: The most senior voted to allow action ("I'm not letting them play 4."); the second would have doubled, but said he wouldn't go against a director's ruling which ever way it went; two voted no action allowed; one adamantly refused to take a position. ( Wimp.)

(For purposes of this poll, I will assume that bidding 4 and doubling are equivalent--please let me know if you think I am wrong.)

No call allowed: Roll it back to 4 making.
