East should realise that the lead is probably a singleton.. However, East must not be hasty and give partner a ruff straight away. If  East does return a club at trick two, then the contract is cold. East should switch to the 10 as the defence needs to get two diamond tricks and a club ruff to defeat 4. The key here is not to play too quickly. This hand was made a lot of times as East got excited about partners singleton club and returned a club immediately letting the contract make.
