E/W +170

Joel Wooldridge found a nice line to make +170 on a partscore deal from the final session of the Reisinger. After (1) -- P -- (P), Joel had an easy 1 call and finished in the normal 2 partial.

Given that his partner must be weak to pass 1, leading from hearts or clubs looked dangerous. So Lauria chose to go passive with ace and a trump. This solved the first of Joel's problems. Joel won and drew the last trump. With the heart opening bid on his left, a double finesse in hearts was guaranteed to work so making 3 was easy now, but which heart would you lead? Joel had a nefarious plan and he didn't want a cover. He led the heart 9 and ran it to win the trick.

Joel cashed one more trump pitching a diamond from dummy as Lauria pitched an idle club. Now he cashed three rounds of diamonds. On the third round of diamonds,Lauria made a pitching error. He could see 3 hearts in dummy and he chose to keep parity holding on to 3 hearts. He came down to: --, KJx, --, KJ

Joel now leaped on the error. After Lauria pitched a second club, Joel pitched a heart from dummy. Now he led a small club from hand towards the Qxx. Whatever Lauria did, he was doomed. If he played jack, it would be covered with the queen and Lauria would later be endplayed with the now singleton K. If he rose with the K and exited with the J (as he actually did), Joel could duck the second club in dummy. If Versace also ducked then Lauria was endplayed and if Versace overtook with the ace then the club queen had become a trick.

Joel deserves kudos for inducing an error from a great opponent and exploiting it. That kind of clever play makes him one of America's top players.
