Lose Final B to Garomov with me
(Page of 5)

the annual 53rd  Israeli bridge fesitval of Tel Aviv ended yesterday.

Many competitions were held, you can see them all here:

http://ibf-festival.org/index.php

i only played in one - the MP pairs.

the competition consist of 2 qualification rounds, top 76 pairs qualify for final A, rest play final B.

We had the unfortunate luck to finish 77th  so we had to settle for final B.

We know it won't be easy to win, since some very good players managed to drop out to final B as well, starred by Andrey Gromov and his partner Anna Gulevich.

3 hands were very unfortunate for us. here they are:

West
AK64
QJ93
Q8
A62
East
Q93
A842
J942
Q7
W

East missed his partner's opening, and passed instead of bidding the natural stayman.

After a lead, 1NT made by the nose ( K was offside and the 's were 4-1 ) and a 20% score for us. Most of the field played 4 of course, down 1 or 2.

Then over the very next hand:

you hold:

AK3

T765

AT9

J72

All white, you open 1, and your LHO bids 4. X from partner, your call?

If you pass like our opp, you score +300 and 72,41% . if you bid 4, you're down and score 21.56%.

And then comes the most interesting one:

I received a J lead, how would you play?

i played 2 top 's (W discarded ), then  to the T, J , Q.

West played T, i won with the Ace and played to the Q. back came to 9 of , K , A , ruff.

I had no choice but to guess the 's, and i misguessed, played a to the T and went down twice.

In hindsight i think i should've known that W is short in , as he would've probably overcall 1 with AQXXX and JT9X ,

then percentage is to finesse the other way.

Andrey Gromov played the same contract but from the other side, and after East decided to lead from her doubleton rather than the natural T, had no problem to collect 11 tricks and score 71.19%. Interesting enough, even after the T lead it seem like declarer has the tempo to ruff 2 's and squeeze East in the minors. This proved to be the decisive hand. Gromov-Gulevich's 66.61% session trumped our 65.41% and edged us out of first place. for the 2nd year in a row, we finished 2nd place in final B. must be a recored, but always good to have next year...
