Orlando Team Schedule Revisions

UPDATE - As stated in the comments below, based on entries on September 12, the Rosenblum and Mixed Team schedules remain as originally published: 2 day Swiss qualifying, reducing to 64 teams for KO play. The Rosenblum continues with 1 day, 56 board KO rounds of 64, 32, 16, 8 & 4, and a 2 day, 96 board final. The Mixed continues with 1/2 day, 28 board rounds of 64, 32, 16, & 8, and 1 day, 56 board Semifinal and Final. The McConnell, with 17 teams currently entered, will have a 2 day Swiss to reduce to 8 teams, followed by 2 day, 84 board Quarterfinal and Semifinal rounds and a 2 day, 96 board Final. If the entry increases to 22 or more teams, the 2 day Swiss will reduce the field to 16, and there will be 1 day Rounds of 16 & 8, and 2 day Semifinal and Final. The Rand, with 29 teams entered will have a 2 day Swiss to reduce to 16 teams, 1 day Rounds of 16 and 8, and 2 day Semifinal and Final.

The number of teams currently entered in the Orlando team events does not support the schedule as originally published. The WBF hopes that there will be enough additional entries this week to keep the original schedue. That would probably require 96 teams in the Rosenblum and Mixed Teams, and 48 teams in the McConnell and Rand, so that at most 2/3 of the original field qualifies. If there aren’t sufficient teams by Monday, Sept. 10th, the WBF has committed to posting revised team schedules by Wednesday, Sept. 12th at the latest.

The likely changes if the numbers of teams stay close to what they are now (74 in the Rosenblum, 15 in the McConnell, 24 in the Rand and 76 in the Mixed) would be:

Rosenblum: Swiss will be extended to 3 days and will qualify 32 teams; there will be a preliminary cut after the 2nd day which will eliminate approximately the bottom half of the teams below 32nd place. The KO schedule will remain unchanged, except that it will start with the Round of 32. Players on teams eliminated after 2 days will be able to enter the Open Pairs on the first day (they will have to pay the Pairs entry fee) or play in the Post Rosenblum Swiss Teams (no additional entry fee) the next two days.

Rand: 2-day Swiss will qualify 16 teams and the KO will start with the Round of 16. The Semifinal will be extended to 2 days. Players on teams eliminated after the Swiss will be able to enter the Senior Pairs on the first day (they will have to pay the Pairs entry fee) or play in the Post Rosenblum/McConnell/Rand Swiss Teams (no additional entry fee).

McConnell: 3-day complete Round Robin will qualify 8 teams (unless 24-48 teams are entered, in which case probably a 2 day Swiss will qualify 16 teams and the KO Semifinal will be extended to 2 days). The KO will be shortened so that it ends before the Women’s Pairs Final in order to allow the McConnell Finalists to drop in to the Pairs final.

Mixed: 2 day Swiss will qualify 32 teams, KO Quarterfinal will be a full day match. Note that there isn’t room in the schedule for a 3-day Swiss, but another possibility would be a 2-1/2 day Swiss to cut to 32, leaving the KO schedule as is.

One issue that you should take into consideration is how the team schedules impact the associated Pair events. For example, one reason to have a cut after 2 days of Roenblum play is because the Pairs qualification starts on the third day of the Rosenblum. If all of the Rosenblum teams play for 3 days of Swiss, there will be a very small number of players in the first day of the Pairs Qualifying and then a very large number of pairs from teams that failed to qualify in the Roenblum will drop in to the second day. Probably over 2/3 of the second day field will be pairs from teams that failed to qualify in the Rosenblum. If the drop in pairs are given carry over a little above average (which is what normally happens), very few if any of the pairs who played the first day would be in a qualifying spot at the start of the second day.

I’ve posted this because the WBF officials who will be making any necessary changes are listening to the players, so your feedback on the proposed changes will be very helpful. Please try not to suggest drastic changes to the schedule, since players have entered the events expecting approximately what was proposed. What to do in future years is a subject for later, not now.

Edit to change the McConnell Round Robin to 3 days, not 2.
