Rest days

The advice given to people who are undertaking an exercise regime or training for a race is to take regular rest days to allow the body to recover.

Does the same apply to mental activities? Does it help, in some way, to have days (or maybe even longer periods)  where one doesn't do anything bridge-related, or is the best way to improve, or just stay sharp, to play and/or read and/or study every day?
