Congratulations to teamSCHWARTZ(Richard Schwartz, Allan Graves, Lotan Fisher, Ron Schwartz, Boye Brogeland, and Espen Lindqvist)for winning the 2014 Spingold over teamMONACO(Pierre Zimmermann, Franck Multon, Geir Helgemo, Tor Helness, Fulvio Fantoni, ClaudioNunes). MONACOjumped out to a 41-7 lead in the first quarter, butSCHWARTZcame back with a big second quarter to lead 68-56. The third quarter sawSCHWARTZextend their lead to 18.

The fourth quarter saw two wild hands in consecutive boards. First, both tables reached a poor grand on the same bidding sequence:

On a trump lead, the hand essentially boils down to which red suit to play for 4 tricks. Both declarerswent after diamonds, which is slightly superior as it gives declarer the extra chance of pinning the doubleton 7 offside (with a doubleton trump in the short hand). Unfortunately, hearts was the suit with the favorable layout, so both tables finished -100 for a push.

After that dispiriting result, both Norths then picked up the following hand:

At both tables, the auction was at 4 before either North had a chance to speak. (At the other table, Fantunes opened a "intermediate" 2 [10-13HCP with a 5-card suit] instead of a standard 1, but the other bids were the same.).

What call would you make?

Both Norths guessed to bid 6. The full hand :

6 is down 1 after the natural A lead. However, at the other table, theMONACOWest decided to save with 6 over 6. This was quickly doubled and sent for -500, sending 11 critical IMPs to theSCHWARTZteam and icing the match.

Also, congratulations to Tim Heeres for winning the Fantasy Spingold in dominating fashion. In an event with a large number of upsets, it's amazing that his entry was able to predict the teams and winners of both semi-finals and finals correctly. Tim, you'll be hearing from us...
