SF Online Robot NABC Event - Day 3
(Page of 26)

As mentioned in the previous article (see SF Online Robot NABC Event - Day 2) this time I played the hands right through last night and then are collecting and writing them up tonight a day later.  This did make it easier to play quickly in just over an hour, but means I may not remember the hands as well for my decision points.  Here was the last day:

Another weakish 11 flat hand in 3rd which I open.  We end up in 3 and the diamond lead means I can make an extra trick.

The end position here with 3 cards was made much easier when E covered the 8 setting up the 3 over the 2.  If E ducks I need to read the position and use the hearts as a stepping stone to the diamond K.

I don't pull the 1NT to my second suit and while double dummy 1NT should be down 1, when I attack hearts T2 W wins and plays hearts back T3.  When both sides lead a suit, one of them is usually wrong, and here this led to the overtrick.

I'm not sure why I bid this one this way?  I must have miscounted my hand as 14 instead of 18. I'm lucky that +150 was more than 60%, as 3NT= should have been the result at many more tables.

The diamond lead forces us to take that winning finesse, and not taking the spade finesse but leading the club up gives us enough tempo for the overtrick and a good score.

I had trepidation in the auction on this one thanks to the only "likely stop" from partner, but 3nt worked out very well in practice when they kept attacking that well stopped suit and ignoring the spades.

Partner makes the heart positive and over the second suit spades I can keycard to find the missing cards.  If they had attacked spades I couldn't have set up the clubs, but the hearts do set up for 12 top tricks (when the Q of clubs is onside / dropping).

I decide that 3NT looks better than 4 on this likely thin game contract.  This is sort of right with the hearts split, but sort of wrong with the club weakness.  Fortunately the robots don't maximally punish me by playing clubs through E but instead W cashes the club K which leaves me down only 1 for a good result.

In 3NT I don't feel I have the transportation to go after diamonds and take the heart finesse so I play to setup the hearts for length tricks.  When W gets in on the 3rd round he abandons the clubs and switches to the K which lets me force through an extra spade trick for a great result.

I'm tempted to open 5, but decide to take it slowly and manage to win it in 4 but go down 1 when the robots take their tricks.  There were people who were allowed to make 4, but some did so by bidding 4 not 3 and getting the robots to attack clubs after the spade and spade ruff, and even when in on the A still played club again!

The first 17 hands were all above 50% scores, but this board is the turning point as it's a disaster and 5 of the last 7 hands are below average scores.  I'm not sure if I was getting tired/unfocused, or I let one disaster turn into more, or just luck/random where the bad boards are.  And to be fair, while playing I thought some of the earlier hands were going to be below average as well, so I'm not sure I knew this was the first below average board.

Anyways over the cap 2 and leb 3 I wasn't sure how to check for the hearts stop.  Both 3M calls had weird information for what I'd be showing, and I misread the 3 call instructions as being more neutral towards the majors and giving partner a chance to describe their hand, but I missed that it showed 4-5.  This means partner was convinced I had not clubs and even over the jump to 5 "corrected" to 5.

When the dummy came down I thought I might have lucked into bad spot that was makable but the 6-0 trump break was hard to overcome.  Lots of people in NT with our cards and despite the fact they can win the first 5 tricks double dummy, the stiff K is in practice the stopper needed to take the 11 or 12 (or 13) tricks at other tables.

I'm right on the upper border of the 1 advance (Do I give myself more total points than hcp for the stiff K of clubs in their suit?), and partner decides to pass it with the pretty strong overcall and we miss the game as a result.

I decide this hand is slightly too strong to open a 15-17 NT and this is poorly judged when I'm left in 2 instead of opening 1NT and getting transfered to 2.

The auction pinpoints that 3NT is in trouble on the clubs, and I guess I should leave the hand in 4, but I think my 19 hcp plus 6-8 from partner may well give game a shot.  Then in the play I can go down 1 instead of 2 if I play for the spades 3-3 with the K onside and down 1 would have been above 50%.

This is marginally below average when we make the normal 3 call and get left there but 10 tricks are available if you play for the drop and not the finesse in the 9 card trump suit.  I try to duck a diamond to set up a possible pitch if they are 3-3 but the opponents switch to take the hearts (and diamonds weren't splitting anyways).

The final results this time was 62.18% good for 147/2132 and 1.5 MP.

That made overall across the 3 sessions an average of 58.5%, good for 251/2132 and 2.78 MP.

It is a small sample size, but I'm not surprised that my scores were better the less I was writing contemporaneously which each session better than the last.  When writing the article while playing scored 54.15%, when writing the hand up immediately after playing it before moving to the next hand scored 59.16%, and when playing straight through and only writing them up the next day scored 62.18%.

Hopefully some people found it interesting or useful to see the robot hands/play in this sort of event.  For all the talk from some people of robots play "not being bridge" or the like, it felt pretty bridge like to me (really only the inferences from "best hand" seems different to me).  Some times my opponents, partner, or I made a mistake - but that doesn't feel that different than in the club when the same can be said to be true.  Some of my robot partners bids/plays/systems were frustrating to me, but I think I made at least as many clear mistakes as my robot partner did through out the event.
