Should a bid of pass with negative lead directing inference be alerted

Let me use an example. Suppose you use X of a ace asking bid to show you want the lower suit led, so pass would have some negative inference about that suit. The X of course should be alerted by your partner, but should P also be alerted? If not, should your partner explain it before she leads, or when declarer asks about your leads, or only if he specifically asks about the P.

Pass should be alerted.
Pass should not be alerted but its significance should be explained to declarer before leading.
Pass should not be alerted but its significance should be explained to declarer if asked about your leads.
Pass should not be alerted but its significance should be explained to declarer if he specifically asks if P means something.
None of the above.
