Some hands from Spingold QuarterFInals

Here are a few interesting hands from the Spingold QuarterFInals. Watch Zia bring home a 3NT that Smirnov (the German expert), failed in and look how Helness executes the unloaded pistol pseudo-squeeze.

Wait for the hands to load:

Zia brings home 3NT - his line seems better percentage.

The late John Lowenthal coined the term the "unloaded pistol" to describe a pseudo-squeeze where you abandon a winner in dummy that is opposite your void. Now when you run your tricks both opponents think they need to guard that suit and unguard some other key suit. Watch Helness use it here:

. Note that North fatally threw a diamond on the fourth spade to keep the guarded Q. By the way can anyone bid these strong 3 suited hands well? The other table ended in 3NT after a strong club auction and that contract failed miserably. Perhaps 4 is as good as anything.
