In the open room, van Prooijen reasonably pictured North with a pointed 2-suiter short in hearts, not clubs. At first glance, his choice of the club ace seems to have cost him two heart tricks, but after Lauria misguessed diamonds, he found himself tapped out. Two heart tricks evaporated, then turned into a tap and 3 tricks. The closed room saw a transfer auction by Ginossar and Pachtmann, putting West on lead. His natural diamond jack blew out the entire suit and South was soon claiming 10 tricks. These 14 IMPs put Schwartz in the lead by 1. With one quarter to go, Cayne has now retaken the lead by 3 IMPs.
