A friend sent me this hand from BBO (blame me for the auction) and asked how to play 7D, double dummy. At first it looked like a non-simultaneious double squeeze: Win the trump lead, unblock SA, trump to dummy, ruff a spade, then run trumps reaching

A club to dummy squeezes West out of his heart guard, then SK squeezes East in the rounds.

But West can guard the blacks, sort of. So go back two tricks

A trump squeezes West out of his club guard. Another trump eastablishes the position above. So it's a compound squeeze (a positional, one loser, triple squeeze to establish a double squeeze). No big deal, I guess, but I thought the following points were interesting:

  • CT is not a menace.
  • West is menaced by HQ, then
  • West is menaced by Hx two tricks later.
  • if you swap the east and west hands, there is still a triple squeeze at trick 8, but it doesn't establish a double squeeze, or any trick at all.
  • If South had HAJ and North had Hxxxx West would be guard squeezed.
