Surprise!
(Page of 4)

I have recently started hosting a Thursday evening session for beginners & improvers (maximum NGS rank 8 = 51% average). This week we had 21 players turn up so I had to play. This hand will stay with me for quite some time...

We get off to a good start when West leads the K...  ,A,4,2

Declarer now cashed A, 3,J,2   and followed by leading Q, K, 2, 5...

I suppose they must have entry problems and are hoping for a 3-3 diamond split...

East returns 6, 5, 3, Q  and declarer now switches attention to clubs  Q,6,2,A

West decides now is a good time to attack hearts and leads K,Q,7,2 followed by 3, 4, A,4

East exits with the 9,J,10, 6

Can you guess what happens next?

Obviously South painstakingly reels off 5 heart tricks!

Sadly my partner has to concede the final club trick for 1 down!

I don't know how the bidding/play went at the other table in 3NT, or the one who made 2NT+1.

The remaining 2 tables were in 3 by North and some generous defence saw 9 and 10 tricks made.

This was the full hand:

Next weeks mini-lesson before the start of play writes its self.

"Last week South held the J and 9 of hearts and 5 more, do you know what we call a 7-card suit?"

Trying to draw some consolation: at least it appears that no-one passed 1 with the South hand.
