Vanderbilt preliminary round

The Vanderbilt had 72 entries, necessitating a preliminary day to come down to 64. The normal way of doing this is to play 4-way matches with 3 progressing, which in this case should apparently have the lowest-seeded 32 teams competing in 8 4-ways to bring 24 teams to the round of 64 (joining 40 byes).

Instead, they have the lowest-seeded 30 teams playing 7 4-ways and 1 head-to-head, bringing 7x3+1=22 to join 42 byes in the round of 64.

Does anyone understand why they they might be doing this (did they ask Douglas Adams' Deep Thought how many teams should have byesSmile)?
